1. Tall Drink of (16:9) iPhone 5

    Marco Arment:

The rumors about a taller-screened iPhone are piling up so much recently that it’s looking fairly likely. I’ll reserve final judgment until I use an iPhone with this display shape, but tentatively, I’m skeptical.

Couldn’t agree more. These “larger” iPhone rumors seem to have some credibility at this point. But something still doesn’t seem right. Holding my iPhone, I can’t help think that the screen needs also to be wider as well as taller if it is going to be larger at all. In the hand, it’s going to be one long, skinny piece of glass.

That height to width ratio just seems unbalanced and not Apple’s style. The best example I can think of is the vestigial chin on the iMac. Functionally unnecessary, the chin serves a purely (or at least mostly) aesthetic purpose. Without it, the iMac loses personality even if a chinless iMac would be visually simpler. So with the iPhone. The 1136x640 rumor would be too long for its height if it retains the front-facing personality traits of all previous iPhones.
